Executive Order: Timur Valiev Will Get Rematch With Chris Gutierrez

World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo is back with the latest edition of “Executive Orders.” The legendary kickboxer and current exec gives fans a little peek behind the scenes of the promotion with an exclusive new post on WSOF.com each week.

“Never leave it in the hands of the judges.”

It’s become a cliche in MMA, but over and over we see that it’s actually sound advice, as well.

This past weekend’s WSOF28 event in California gave us our latest example, with Chris Gutierrez‘s split-decision win over Timur Valiev.

Now let me start out by saying I don’t want to criticize either man. Chris took an incredibly tough fight in his first World Series of Fighting appearance, and he proved he belonged in the cage with Timur, who I think can definitely be a future champion. Those two guys went toe-to-toe from the start, and it was a great effort from them both. That said, I don’t understand the scores in that fight.

Chris showed a lot of heart, never backing down, and I think you can easily give him the third round. That shows his attitude and effort and proves he’s got a great future ahead, never giving up and pushing forward until the end. However, I think it’s very clear that Timur took the first two rounds.

So we’ve discussed it at the office, and I think the best decision to make is to book a rematch between Chris and Timur. I wanted this fight to determine the next contender for our bantamweight champion, Marlon Moraes (who looked incredible at WSOF28, by the way), but I don’t think anybody wants there to be controversy heading into the next title fight.

I know how frustrated Timur was with the decision, and this will give him a chance to prove the judges were wrong. And for Chris, what better than to silence the critics than to come in and notch a more emphatic, more definitive victory? I think this is honestly the right decision, and I think our fans will be happy to see these two warriors run it back.

We’ll pin down an exact date and event for the rematch very soon.

And hopefully, they won’t leave it in the hands of the judges.
